How to Practice Guitar Efficiently

Everybody knows that practice makes perfect, especially at when it comes to the guitar.  But if you don’t know how to practice effectively it can be worthless.  There are two great ways that you can make the most of your practice time.

Metronome

This first way is really well known.  You simply take a riff or lick that your having trouble with, and play it at half speed or slower to a metronome.  As you master the speed you can increase the metronome speed by a couple of bpms and work it up to the next level.  If you don’t have a metronome, you can get a free one right here.

Egg Timer

This method is a little less regimented and more free.  Set an egg timer and then start playing a lick very slowly.  You can increase the tempo and decrease it as you feel, just play constanly for 3 minutes.  You might play for 40 secs at a comfortable tempo and then for 20 secs “sprint” and play as fast as you can. Eventually your comfortable tempo and sprinting tempo will get higher and higher.  If you don’t have an egg timer handy, use the clock on your computer.
